Despite having the 15th largest economy in the world, a report conducted by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy stated that “in 2016, 43.6% of the population lived in poverty.” This poverty can lead to many Mexican citizens turning to illegal activities like drug trafficking. The struggles of living in poverty are expressed by many Mexican citizens through various forms of art, like poems, songs, and paintings. An excerpt from a poem written by Angelina Sara, a Mexican citizen, illustrates this exactly. This poem shows that in Mexico there is a lot of poverty and living in poverty is hard. Knowing that you can make a lot of money by trafficking drugs, makes this an appealing option to a lot of people.
“El poder del dinero. Su opulencia
nos lleva por caminos ilegales;
marchamos en su honor, marchas triunfales
y olvidamos ternuras y clemencia”
“The power of money. Its opulence
Takes us through illegal paths;
We march in its honor, we march triumphantly
And we forget tenderness and clemency”
Angelina, Sara. “El Powder Del Dinero.”
