The following photograph was taken by Horacio Villalobos and it was taken while a man being given clean syringes in Portugal. By decriminalizing the consumption of drugs, Portugal was able to provide rehabilitation help to anyone who demanded it, and to those who did not, the government offered them a safe way to use the drugs they would have used either way. When decriminalizing drugs, Portugal’s main goal was to promote the safe use of drugs for those that were already using them. By giving drug addicts clean syringes, the government of Portugal has been able to decrease the amount of HIV related drug infections. By following Portugal’s steps, the United States can get what it wants, which is more people living healthier lives.
